Amodito Roddur

We live in the time of facile relationships; where inner bonding is being substituted by outer spectacles. Permanence of partnership is being overtaken by skin deep achievements of ‘relationship goals’. From the rubble of modern day love, emerges “Amodito Roddur”. It is a two act play directed by Debesh Chattopadhyay. The first act has been penned by Chattopadhyay himself; while Nirmal Verma lends literacy magic for the second act. It is neither a retelling of contemporary love nor an inquisition against its failure. “Amodito Roddur” is a fleeting glance at the very essence of love. Ankita Majhi’s glance in the first act is as furtive as two souls falling in love at first sight; while Arpita Ghosh’s glance in the second act is drenched in melancholy of a long lost past. They are searching for the love they once had. With nostalgia as our vessel, we journey with these two women to find our own glance.

Maachi has been adapted from “The Flies” by Jean Paul Sartre. The play starts with Orestes’ quest to find his true self and ends on his existential decision of defiance and sacrifice. In a locale where plague reigns supreme, flies scourge guilt ridden humans, sordid imagery haunts the milieu, saviours need somewhere to belong to and sadistic gods seek hideouts to eavesdrop, Sartre’s version of the Electra Myth comes to life. Continuing the tradition of reworking of ancient Greek myths in the pro-holocaust scientific age, Sartre uses the myth of Electra to incorporate his existential themes into The Flies for a modern audience.

The play Samadhan is Bengali translation of a world famous play “The Measures Taken” ,written by the twentieth century German Dramatist _ Bertolt Brecht. It was translated in Bengali by the eminent theatre personality Utpal Dutta.

Four Agitators from Moscow return from a successful mission in China and are congratulated for their efforts by a central committee (called The Control Chorus). The four agitators, however, inform the committee that during their mission they were forced to kill a young comrade for their mission to succeed. They ask for judgment from the committee on their actions. The committee holds their verdict until after the four agitators re-enact the evens that lead to the young comrade’s death.

The four agitators tell of how they were sent on a mission to educate and help organize the workers in China. At a party house(the last before they reach the frontiers of China) they meet an enthusiastic young comrade, who offers to join them as their guide. The agitators must hide their identities because educating and organizing the workers in China is illegal. The director of the party house (the last before the frontier) helps the four agitators and young comrade in the obliteration of their true identities. They all put on masks in order to appear as Chinese. They are told to keep concealed that they are

communist. Their mission must remain a secret. Should they be discovered, the authorities will attack the organization and the entire movement; not merely the lives of the four agitators and the young comrade will be put in danger. The agitators and the young comrade all agree to these conditions.

As a result, he eventually exposes himself and the four agitators by ripping off his mask and proclaiming the teaching of the party. When he does this, he puts the entire mission and movement in danger. He is identified, unmasked, just as riots break out and a revolutionary uprising among the worker is beginning. The authorities are now in pursuit of the young comrade and his friends. Still shouting out against the party, the young comrade is struck in the head by one of the agitators and they carry him as far away as they could, to the nearly lime pits. There, the agitators debate on what to do with him.

To save the movement, they conclude that their only solution is for the young comrade to die and be thrown in the lime pits where he will be burned and become unrecognizable. They ask him for his consent to this. The young comrade agrees to his fate in the interest of revolutionizing the world and in the interest of communism. He asks the four agitators to help him with his death. They shoot him and throw his body into the lime pit.

The play – Karu Basona is based on the novel written by Jibanananda Das in 1932. It is believed to be by and large an autobiographical novel of the poet that was published posthumously in 1986.

The play is centred around a man whose love for art (Karu) takes his mind away from this material world. He has a family, but his love for art makes him careless and lost in that world. His wife complaints.His daughter suffers. His parents wants him to grow in life, become rich enough to make the family happy. But he, being a part of the world of Passion for Art (KaruBasona), is not bothered about the materialistic desire. He loves to spend time in nature. He loves to watch the ripples in the water when a stone is thrown. He loves to see the gentle breeze on the paddy fields and loves to listen to song of the nature. His creative mind meanders in the field of performing arts where he adores great performers and dreams to be in their world of magnificent performances, not bothering about the fact that he is ignorant about his family, his wife, his daughter or his parent’s material requirement. When his wealthy uncle comes as a guest to stay in their house, his parents try to serve him beyond their capacity only with an expectation that his influence will get their son well placed in life. However this man, when asked to talk about his career, he fails to do that and discusses artistic world with the uncle, who takes advantage of the situation and instead of helping him, exploits the family. This further ruins the family life even economically but the man hardly is moved by such failures. His love for art continues and his desire of creativity grows to an extent that one day, being in his own world, he dies in a road accident and leaves the material world in search of a world where he finds his true passion where family, money or influential rich relative hardly matters. Karubasona is almost like an autobiography of the poet which depicts the failure of a family person in search of true love for Art, which never got satisfied in this material world.

Written in an epistolary form, the story is about Mrinal who has written a  letter to her husband. She is writing a letter for the first time in their fifteen years of being married. Writing from Puri, she recalls her childhood and how she came into his family as the second bride in his joint family. Through the institution of marriage, she recalls how in the marriage market, looks constitute the most important part to be bride. Intelligence was a curse. She used to secretly write poems and at her husbands house. Her daughter dies after being born and the confinement in which Mrinal has to stay has been described as unhygienic. The entry of Bindu in her life brings a change and Tagore shows the treatment of women as dependents in a house. The suffering that Bindu goes through and the final outcome of her committing suicide goes to show the extent of emotional abuse a woman goes through and is still blamed even after her death for the errors that haven’t been committed by her. Mrinal unable to bear the suffocating environment of the house decides to leave behind everything under the pretext  of going on a pilgrimage and decides to secretly take Bindu along. By the time the letter comes to an end, we find Mrinal free in person and in her thoughts- freely able to convey what she thought about the society in general and her husband in particular.

Tagore through the story of  Mrinal speaks out about every small vice which still prevails in India even at the turn of the century -the upper castes, patriarchy and child marriage to name a few. Mrinal suffers because of her intelligence.

Duto Din

“Duto Din” is indeed the story of solitude of human. A lonely soul always seems to suffer from insecurity. His family, his lifestyle seems to be meaningless. Life to him, as such, becomes benumbed…suffocating. So he becomes restless for his desired salvation.In this play we face some jeopardized souls who is desperate for this salvation…. Atul…an old man…who finds solace in cherishing the memory of his departed wife…seeks salvation in this reminiscence… Lalita….lives in a  world of unknown anxiety. An imaginary fright disturbs her life…and she continues to live in this fright. Younger sister…Ronita and her corporate executive husband, Ujjwal…are as if residents of isolated islands. Their opulent lifestyle lacks the basic precondition of married life, which is trust. Among them suddenly we see two people, the maid Kalpana& her child Ribhu – who belong to a different world altogether. Their life is like a free flowing river. Young Ribhu’s simplicity and candid conversations brings a gust of fresh air in the suffocated lifestyle of thesepeople.On one hand the complicacy of life, and on the other hand the desire for salvation – is what this play lead us to. But is this exigency of human existence is just an affair of two days? …or is it the crisis of the endangered human lifestyle which engulfs human feelings into deep solitude? In this dazzling world don’t we find a Lalita, Ronita, Ujjal…or more importantly an Atul in our daily routine of life? Can we say with conviction that none of us are not as selfish……or as jeopardized… as they are?

The play –  The Play is based on the German Novel “Darkness At Noon” (German name : Sonnenfinsternis, meaning Solar Eclipse). The Bengali play-script has been adapted from the English version of the novel “Darkness at Noon” translated by Daphne Hardy.

The original novelis by the Hungarian born British novelist Arthur Koestler, first published in 1940. This is his best-known work and tells the tale of Rubashov,  an old Bolshevik and October Revolutionary, who is cast out, imprisoned, and tried for treason against the very Soviet Union he once helped to create.

The most important theme in the Ghare Baire involves the Swadeshi movements and love.The  three main characters Nikhilesh, Bimala & Sandip have never been confined to their interpersonal relationship. Bimala,  as a symbol of ordinary people like us, is caught between two contradictory ideologies: that of austere,and unchanging path of truth that Nikhilesh follows and the strategy of short-term gains that  Sandip chooses.

The Play : ‘…Kathaa Amritasamaan’  is a play based on the Mahabharata. It speaks of the moral values, of the right & wrong, of the horrors of war and its aftermath that were not only true for the characters of the epic but are true for us as well – the present day man and his society. Complex, multilevel & multidimensional causes compel one to express oneself. The events arouse a thousand questions in her, so she poses questions and puts her own comments while narrating the events. And thus she delves deep into the world of Mahabharata. Looking back from Draupadi, she explores Kunti, Gandhari, Ambika, Satyabati. Wisdom of Bhisma amazes her. She is intrigued by the character of Krishna, his playful childhood, his endeavour to build an empire on the basis of justice or to improve the lot of his clan ending in nothing.

Tagore’s “Raja”tell us that each one of us has to journey through an incomprehensible darkness which permeates the petty logic of our everyday routine. Naathavati Anaathavat

Naathavati Anaathavat revolves around to Draupadi of the Mahabharata. Though she had five husbands there was none to protect her. She was a king’s daughter but was humiliated in the court of another king,Dhritarashtra.She was a queen herself but had to play maid to another queen.It was this tragic irony that stimulated Saoli Mitra to look at the epic afresh from Draupadi’s perspective. Saoli Mitra’s strategy of recounting the story as a “Kathakaar”  allows her to slip in and out of numerous roles,evoking a spectrum of emotions and events.
