Saoli Mitra, only child of the doyen of Indian theatre Sri Sombhu Mitra&Srimati Tripti Mitra was born in Kolkata in the late 40s. She did her post graduation in theatre from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and continued her research on theatre and contemporary art. Among her research , notable work include “Barnattok Natyadhara” & “Rabindra Sanglaper bachik abhinayer swarup” ( the voval acting on Tegore’s dialogues)
Saoli started acting at a very tender age of 5 and ½ years. As a child artist she acted as basher in TulshiLahiri’sChheraTnar & AmalinTagore’s Daakghar, both were Bohurupi production. In Bohurupi she also acted in playes like Kimbadanti, BadalSirkar’sPaglaGhora.Tagore’s Raja, translation of Ionnesco’sGandar, Tagore’s GhareBaire. She acted in “Galileo r Jibon” (on life of Galileo), produced by Calcutta Repertory, Directed by Mr. Fritz Benewitz. For Doordarsan Kendra, Calcutta she acted in Rabindranath Tagore’s “Malancha”, directed by Shyamal Sen.
The only movie Saoli acted in was “JUKTI TAKKO AR GAPPO” written & directed by Ritwick Kumar Ghatak. However, later she directed tele film “Subha” based on a short story of Rabindranath Tegore.
Saoli was awarded with “Anandapuraskar” – a literary award conferred by ABP Group for her text of NathabatiAnathabatin 1991. She was recipient of “ShiromoniPuraskar” by Asian Paints for NathabatiAnathabat in 1991.She received the prestigious “SangeetNatak Academy award” in 2003. The Ibsen Centennial award by Norway Culture Depertment was conferred to her in January 2006. In 2009 she was recipient of the Padmasree Award by Govt. of India. The govt. of west Bengal awarded her with “BangaBibhushan” 2012. These are few among the notable awards she has received.
She started her own theatre group, Pancham Vaidic with the legendary production NathabatiAnathabat in 1983. The group staged Dasachakra (adaptation of “ An Enemy of the people” by Henric Ibsen) in 1985, directed by Sri SombhuMitra.
The next production of the group where Saoli acted in a leading role was Raja (a play by Gurudev Rabindranath Tegore) in 1987.
In 1990, PanchamVaidic produced Katha Amritosaman, another milestone production acted by Saoli. It followed with BitataBitangsha(a play on environmental abuse) in 1996 and PutulKhela(based on the famous play “a dolls House” by Henric Ibsen) in 2002. In 2005 Saoli acted/directed Chandali (a play written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tegore). In 2006 she acted in “PoshuKhamar” (Based on Geoge Orwell’s Animal Farm).
Plays directed by her includes NathabatiAnathabat, Katha Amritosaman, BitataBitagsha(a play on environmental abuse), PutulKhela(based on the famous play “a dolls House” by Henric Ibsen), “RajnaitikHatya?” (translation of the English version of the French play “Les Mains Sales” by Jean-Paul Sartre), Chandali (a play written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tegore).
