In the history of mankind murders caused by political conflict is not unique. The protagonist in the play Hugo was sent to murder Hoederer, the leader of the Proletarian party. Hugo, a young intellectual belonging to the bourgeoisies society had joined this party being inspired by the ideology of socialism. His ideology is to become a perfect revolutionary wants to get this opportunity. As per the plan, Hugo reaches Hoederer’s secret haunt to join Hoederer as his personal secretary alongwith his wife, Jessica. Inspite of repeated attempt he cannot succeed in his mission. He gets fascinated with the personality of the leader. Yet he could not accept Hoederer’s political ideology.He gets tore apart in this discourse. Parallel to this discourse runs a deep unimaginable romantic story. At the centre of that story was Jessica, who unknowingly gets involved in this conspiracy. She does not get her desired love from Hugo, neither the respect – as she also represents the bourgeoisies, who Hugo hates. Hugo’s weakest point is Olga, another leader in the party.
At the climax Jessica gets mesmerised at the intellect, speech and personality of Hoederer. She falls in love with this gentleman. Wants to save him. But fails. Hugo murders Hoederer. But is the reson for assassination is political? Or is it because of Jessica? Is it the ideological discourse that turned the upper class intellectual youth Hugo into a murderer? Or is the murder a crime of passion? If it is because of ideology Hugo committed the murder then he should be honored as a revolutionary. But does he get that honour? Among multiple questions, these dilemmas haunt our minds as audience – who is right? Is it Hugo? Or is it Hoederer? What is more important? Ideology or Morality? Or is it Policy applied in politics?
